Unless you live in one of the villages where everyone returned from service in each of the World Wars – the so called “thankful villages” – then you will surely have seen your local memorial adorned with wreaths and poppies today in remembrance of those who have given their lives protecting the freedom of our country. There can be no greater sacrifice than giving ones life to defend our freedom and our way of life. Like most people today I paused today to remember them. Our local memorial had been decorated by children from the local school, with poetry describing many aspects of war and the loss that goes hand in hand with it. I am glad that they are learning about the grim realities of war at an early age. While they may be too young to understand fully, at least it helps to ensure that the sacrifices that have been made are not forgotten.
